Gyroscope
Midnight Express
Festival

So I still havent quite figured out this whole 'emo' thing yet, but after a few listens to Gyroscope's latest EP its safe to say that I'm warming to the genre. Sure, Gyroscope aren't doing anything revolutionary, but its difficult to hold that against them when they write such a good tune.

"Fire Away" and "I Wish I Did" are a perfect balance of pop and punk, while the title track brings us a meticulously put together song with guitar riffs that offset Daniel Sanders's intense vocals perfectly. But all that aside, it's "Sharp Words" that did it for me, coming midway through the EP as the perfect little pop ballad with a genuinely infectious melody.

Gyroscope are like Bodyjar without the bite, Weezer without the cheesiness; like Jimmy Eat World mixed with that infamous Perth pop sensibility (a la Jebediah and The Fergusons). Midnight Express is a disc charged with hooks, emotion and raw energy, and its a truly promising release for a band that have escaped mainstream recognition for far too long now.
