Finally a young band decides to rebel against the easy-listening, indie-pop
that surrounds us and play with grit. Gyroscope have the same penchant for powerful
hooks and bursts of intensity that bands like Superchunk mastered in the mid-90s
but their sound also seems to be influenced by local acts, adding to the evolution
of an Australian guitar sound. Any similarities to peers are overpowered by
the fact that these youngsters have found a stylized sound very early in their
careers considering Midnight Express is only their second release. The Lesser
Me opens proceedings and immediately shows the power Gyroscope can manufacture
through their crisp, distorted sound but Sharp Words hints at the type of songwriting
that may find them nestled in the high rotation category on radio. Midnight
Express is a welcome return to angsty but sensitive indie rock and hopefully
will kick-start a trend and save us from overdosing on guitar-pop. To watch
