The Perth scene has been quite a unique one over the recent years. It has shifted in dominance from the poppy rock sounds of Jebediah and Eskimo Joe to the more metal edged type in Heavyweight Champ and Headshot. The tides continue to turn in the West with a band that people think will hold the Western flag with many years to come. No I'm not talking about The Sleepy Jackson (all though I should be), I'm talking about new comers Gyroscope.

With their EP "Midnight Express" being out for a while now, the band establishes a new kind of emo sound that touches on the fridge of modern rock every once in a while. The start kicks off rather strong with the release highlight 'The Lesser Me' that will get you thinking that we have a good band on our hands here.

When it pushes into the very high radio rotated 'Fire Away' your opinion might change, as this is where Gyroscopes routes really lie. The title track and 'Sharp Words' certainly continue the new branding of this emo sound while the final track 'Chapter 13' ends matters on a more upbeat note as compared to the rest of the pack.

Not sure whether these guys are the next best thing out of WA as some people have suggested. However they will lie under the new sounds of emo and rock that continue to be formed day in day out. Whether that's a good or bad thing is debatable.

The term "emo" just continues to be pushed from one direction to the other and Gyroscope join in on the dibs. People that are into the new brand of punk will fancy this album up to their ears. As for the people that like their material on a raw and old school basis, well that's another story!!!
