1999 aus punk

TOE TO TOE, 28 DAYS, BOREDUMB, GYROSCOPE.

On the 20th December 1999 @ The Grosvenor Backroom, Perth
Got to the Grosvenor right on 6pm (the starting time) only to be waiting another 10-15 minutes until the doors were open and by the time i got inside local pop-punkers gyroscope. were already a couple of songs into their set. I don't know if it was because of the heavier (hardcore) nature of this gig or not but the boys certainly sounded heavier than i've come to expect from them, maybe it was due to their new songs which were played and there were a few of them. All in all gyroscope. impressed me once again and i look forward to a big year from them next year with the release of their debut album, they were a fine start to the night.

Boredumb started their set with Two Steps Back and it just went from there with the guys playing the majority of their ep plus some newies that went down well with the crowd. A pretty good little circle pit had started and the band were keen to keep it going playing tracks such as Throwaway, Clueless and Another Day which kept it in full swing. There was a fair share of onstage banter, more so from mates in the crowd giving the boys shit and the band (especially Stu) jokingly retaliating, which was pretty funny in parts. Boredumb finished up with Pick Up The Pieces and as always put on a good show and probably won some new fans (seeing a fair majority aren't regulars punters on the local scene). Oh yeah Jim can you like move over so we can see you play cause from where i was standing i didn't see you once, that's why i had to move!!

28 Days were great again but i feel they were better last time (probably cause that was the first time i had seen them live). They started off with This Song's About You and followed it up straight away with a remark about how shit the Whitlams are and how on earth did they manage to get first in Triple J's hottest 100 and then go 'maybe this'll win this year' and got right into Kool to a big cheer. Other tracks played included 1988, She's Waiting, Sand and Ball Of Hate plus a few new songs, one called Goodbye. They had even more remarks about the Whitlams and also said how good is Australian music (referring to this gig). 28 Days played well and finished with the crowd favourite La Tune, with a huge roar with it's conclusion, they certainly had the crowd on their side probably partly due to all the free shit they handed out.

Toe To Toe were unbelievable!! As last time i saw them they were straight into Falling Short and they played a good mix of their new album, 'Consolidated' and the 'Tao' album. Songs such as Tear It Down, Slave, Push Comes To Shove, Cutting Cancer and Objector went down a treat with the crowd and quite a healthy circle pit had formed. Neil took over vocal duties for Hold Your Ground while Scottie had a breather, and Neil proceeded to blow us away. They also played a few oldies but goodies in No Allegiance (not suprising) and Goals(a bit of a suprise). The Toeys didn't mess around one bit and put on a fine set, if you weren't blown away by it there's something wrong. Anyway they finished up the night with the cover of RockNRoll Nigga and there were a lot of smiling faces after the show, i definately can't wait for Thursday!!

Awesome gig, shame about a lot of kiddies deciding to sit (especially thru Toe To Toe - how is that possible??) or who hung at the back instead of getting involved, the bands would've been disappointed by this!! Unfortunately a few of the grommies have fucked attitudes aswell (a minority), i saw one knock Rob gyroscope. off the side platform as he was watching 28 Days and i don't blame Rob at all for having a go at the dick. This gig and others would be better for all if everyone showed each other some respect because a few of you don't. Anyway that was my whinge for what was a sick gig!!
