Millencolin, Ballpoint, gyroscope.
On the 18th February 2000 @ The Grosvenor Backroom, Perth
A huge crowd had already gathered by the time i arrived at the Grosvenor full
of eager grommies waiting to see Millencolin. Considering this was a sellout
it didn't take me long to get in, it actually took me longer the night before.
Once inside I waited to catch a glimpse of one of the gyroscope. boys as I was
going to take some pics backstage. Caught up with drummer Rob and was soon backstage
as the boys were set to start their set. This was their first gig for the year
but you wouldn't have guessed as they played an awesome set. They were fully
revved up before getting onstage and they made the most of their support slot
playing a heap of newies, which will feature on their soon to be released ep
Scalectrix. These included the title track, Scalectrix, Half Your Problem and
S4, these tracks showing a more mature song structure, and the crowd were getting
into them for sure. Looking forward to hearing their ep and seeing them live
again soon. Definately a great start to the gig.
Ballpoint were next and I was once again taking shots backstage until the roadie from Millencolin kicked me and most of the other people out of there. Ballpoint played a host of newies aswell as album tracks such as End Of You and Stranglehold and the crew were certainly getting into them with a decent circle pit going. These guys create so much energy onstage and it always makes for an entertaining set, unfortunately some shoes were chucked onstage and the guys weren't too impressed at all. Another solid set from Ballpoint, good to see a circle pit in full swing.
After another long wait (same as the previous night), and after several chants of "MC, MC", and a period of time when the crowd got restless and started throwing empty bottles around, Millencolin came onstage to a huge cheer. They were straight into Bullion and played virtually the same set as the previous night at the Lookout. Highlights for me included Olympic, Puzzle, Story Of My Life, No Cigar and Da Strike. The mosh was pretty mad with all the small kids being chucked into the crowd from the side (elevated) area of the Grosvenor. Unfortunately this resulted in a kid coming past me with his face covered in blood. Behind the mosh was a circle pit going but the real action was up the front with crowdsurfers all over the joint. Some guy started climbing the speakers and jumping into the crowd which brought some cheers. Nikola was getting annoyed by all the shoes/bottles chucked and got hit by a few, fortunately nothing serious though, still people should show some respect. Knowledge finished off their set before they headed off stage. A huge chant of endset resulted in Millencolin reappearing and they ripped into Mr Clean (which got one of the biggest cheers for the night). Fox and Softworld finished things off with the youngsters well satisfied with Millencolin's performance. Hope they decide to come back to Australia (and Perth) real soon.
Thanks goes out to gyroscope. and Ballpoint for letting me go backstage to take some photos. Thanks guys.
