Frenzal Rhomb, 6 Ft Hick, gyroscope., Boredumb

At Metropolis Fremantle on 3rd September, 2000
Got to Freo Metros which was already packed out front with a huge amount of eager grommets hanging around waiting to go inside. It started to sprinkle down so the security started letting people in thru the back entrance and within 10-15 minutes most were inside the venue.

Boredumb were on soon after most were indoors and started off with Another Day, the opening track to their debut of last year, "No Cause For Alarm". With all the drama that has occured lately, Boredumb were in pretty good form but it was still evident their was some friction between certain band members. The all ages crowd were getting into Boredumb with a lot of them crowding at the front of the stage, trying to mosh, while guys like SXE Pete, Simon Edge, Ben D and others were circle pitting, fly kicking and the like. All three tracks from their split with The Beer Goggles were aired aswell as newer stuff from their forthcoming ep such as Tie Down and Never Enuff. Good to see Boredumb live again (it had been awhile!!) and hopefully all the drama that has occured over the last month can be sorted out and they can get back on track.

Next up were emo/melodic punk band, gyroscope. and as soon as they came out onstage heaps of kiddies came to the front of the stage as guitarist Zok chucked out a heap of stickers for them. Singer Dan was sporting a new dyed hairstyle (he's told me it's been like that for a couple of months - hence it's been awhile since i've seen the gyro lads live) but apart from the band were still the same old gyroscope. with a rocking live set as usual.Apart from a few hiccups, like the non existance of vocals early in the set it ran pretty smoothly and the kiddies lapped it up. Tracks such as Skill Degree, S4, Insanity and the title track, Scalectrix, of their debut ep from earlier in the year were played aswell as some newer songs which have noticeable rock influences than some of their previous stuff. As always they were jumping all over the place and were once again a hit with the kiddies playing a very well balanced set.

An unknown band to these parts, 6 Ft Hick came onstage to some curious onlookers, as their drummer was wearing a cowboy hat and the guitarist having long hair, you really couldn't tell what to expect. They started off with a song called God Damn and the mayhem started, loud as fuck with the twin vocalist's going mental moving all over the place and screaming their lungs out. 6 Ft Hick were a mixture of psychobilly and rockabilly which wasn't at all enjoyed by most of the crowd, and by the second song there was a lot of 'fuck off's' and 'we want Frenzal' type of shit going on. The singers reacted to all this bitching from the crowd by launching some spit at them and telling them to fuck off - 'we don't care if you don't like us, you can just fuck off'. They even went a bit too far with both vocalist's putting their hands down their pants and saying hello to their one eyed trouser snakes, now that was pretty ordinary but also funny how the crowd reacted!! The best comment came when the crowd started telling them they were gay and one of the singers goes 'that's what your dad said last night when I was fucking him up the arse', now that didn't go down too well at all. The best thing was that they didn't give a shit and with such a good stage presence the songs were still pretty damn fine. I didn't expect much from the two interstate bands but these guys were a great find, very few bands can make you laugh aswell as play good tunes, it comes naturally for 6 Ft Hick. It was just a shame the crowd were so pro Frenzal and couldn't open their ears, forget about the stage banter and appreciate some good rocking tunes.

After a bit of a wait the band most (I emphasise 'most') were looking forward to seeing (they were the headliners after all), Frenzal Rhomb, hit the stage. Nothing has changed, Jay still talks his shit, which at times is funny, while the others say fuck all, and they still play a pretty standard looking set as far as entertainment values gom so in other words they were pretty boring. Starting with Punch In The Face, they played songs such as Racist, Mum Changed The Locks, All Your Friends Think You're A Fuckhead (which went out to someone called Amy) plus two newies (the second must of been War cause the crowd went wild). I actually thought the first newie (301 or something I think - could be wrong) was better anyway!! Anyway I left after about 10 songs (if that).

A pretty good show, especially seeing how mad 6 Ft Hick's were live. It was disappointed how the crowd reacted to the local bands, some were saying fuck off and stuff to that extent, especially to gyroscope. that is fucking bullshit. Show some respect to the support bands, especially local bands, I mean shit they only play for 40 minutes at the most and it's not as if Frenzal Rhomb weren't gonna play cause the local/support bands were gonna keep playing or something. Some of you are very impatient, stand at the back, shut your mouth and don't spoil everyone else's fun - there are people who enjoy these fine bands and want to see them play live, just like you people want to see Frenzal Rhomb!!
