gyroscope., Chenlab, Ballpoint, Epicine

On the 9th September @ Leederville TAFE
Got to Leederville TAFE just as Epicine were finishing their set, they were okay from what I heard. Anyway stayed outside till just before Ballpoint came on and once inside noticed there were stuff all people inside, a shithouse turnout!!

Ballpoint came on and they played a very similar set to the one from last Sunday at the Hydey with songs such as 4 Weeks, Subside, Reach The Sky and the two newies played. They were getting a good response cause a fair few of the crew showed up but still everyone kept their distance from the band like they had some fatal disease or something, a bit of a shame really as the atmosphere of the gig was very boring and needed to be to be better. They didn't have any problems until late in the set when some minor stuff ups occured but apart from this another good gig from the guys with Cam (as usual) saying some funny stuff and bagging a few things. They finished up with Miles Away, which didn't even provoke some crowd interaction, shame fellas in the crowd!!

Next up were East Coasters Chenlab, who personally i hadn't heard of. They started off with the singer saying a few "soft" words, saying they were from Lismore (same place as Grinspoon - I hoped they sounded a bit better than them). then the singer asked 'what do you get when you cross a brussel sprout and a suburban street?' then pausing for a sec before launching into their first song. Those similarities to Grinspoon came straight back, very similar sound, maybe a tad heavier on some songs and their vocalist was acting just like the vocalist from Grinspoon - staggering around and generally looking like a dick!! He was always off the stage next to the barrier like it was his best friend or lover, touching it and climbing onto it over to the other side where he wandered around trying to look scarey and make the kiddies run, to which most just laughed - but I must admit he was scaring me a little. The rest of the set was much of the same with the guitarist saying a few "weird" words towards the end and the singer saying how proud he was to appear at this fine institution. I was very glad to hear - 'this is our last song' - it didn't happen fast enough!!

gyroscope. were headliners and played a pretty similar set to last Sunday arvo (well for the first 4 or 5 songs - till i had to unfortunately leave). In that short time they had a few problems, Zok's guitar strap (he was borrowing Tim from Ballpoint's guitar) came off mid song and shortly after Rob had problems with his drum kit. Still for the time I was there they played well and i'm sure everyone would've had a good time. Apparently the rest of the set was similar to the one they played at Frenzal Rhomb last weekend.
