Bodyjar, Unwritten Law, gyroscope.

On the 29th September @ Fremantle Metropolis
I hadn't been amped for a gig for ages but I was pretty keen on this one, since Unwritten Law are so good live. We were running very late and since first band up, gyroscope. were gonna start at 7:30pm (from what we heard) we were rushing. All was cool though as the gyro guys heard we were coming late and decided to hold back till around 8pm or so, so that was sweet!! On came the boys and straight down to business with S4, if my drunken memory is correct, then back into a pretty similar set from what they have been playing lately, full of their emo/rock tunes. Songs aired include tracks such as Insanity, Half Your Problem, Final Say, a newie His Word Against Mine and Rhetorical Question, please don't quote me on these though!! As they did the last few songs a full 'rock' ending eventuated with Means To An End, with the end result Dan's guitar getting a working over and also Rob's drums getting knocked around, the crowd loved it though and certainly the gyro lads woulda scored a heap of new fans. Another top show.

Next up were Unwriten Law, who in my books shoulda been the headliners but since it was Bodyjar's album tour they had to play second fiddle, but it didn't look like they fucking cared, as they tore apart Freo Metropolis with one of the most polished and unbelievable sets I have seen in a long time. They were so fucking good I was contemplating stage diving with my video camera, but I held off the temptation, and it was bloody hard!! Starting off with the awesome, Teenage Suicide they didn't hold back one bit, mixing their set up with mainly tracks off their self titled album and a few newer songs which will be on their next album, and they were rad!! The charismatic Unwritten Law frontman, Scott, was all at ease as the crowd lapped up what was happening in front of them, with crowd favourites such as Lonesome, Cailin and California Sky played with such power and heart that I was totally blown away.

The whole set was near perfect and included some stage diving antics and the like which added to the already huge atmosphere. This was nothing like their last (and only other) show in Perth when that big incident occured but I do say that on both occasions they have blown the rest of the band's off the stage and tonight they did it in style finishing off with awesome tracks such as Underground, the old but sick C.P.K. and one of their best songs, Harmonic. What else can I say but this couldn't get any sweeter and I reckon this was one of the set's of the year, and I have seen NOFX this year don't forget... on par with them i'd say. Fucking brilliant stuff, they didn't put a step wrong and if Wade Youman isn't one of the best drummer's in the world I don't know who is.

Headliners for their album tour were Bodyjar another one of the band's who are generally very good live, well they were pretty disappointing tonight. Not sure if it was just cause they had a "off" night or because Unwritten Law put on such a killer show but Bodyjar just couldn't do much right. The majority of the crowd still loved it and the beauty of these guys are that they still sounded okay, but nothing like what we have come to expect from them, ie at Amplifier in March. Cam seemed to be losing breath mid song which was a major problem and most of the night there was no vocals for Relfo, and he looked pissed. Still when they shined they were still good and such tracks as Sequel, Calling Orson and Return To Zero were quite good indeed. Other tracks played included the oldie, Nothing's Clear, You've Taken Everything, Not The Same and Remote Controller among others. Bodyjar just didn't pull it off tonight, finishing up with a b-side - they managed to pull it off well at Amplifier but the song this time around, Opinion, isn't that great a track. I think they are better playing at smaller venues to be honest, so don't expect too much from them when they support Blink 182 then, not that I really care. Hopefully next time I see them(in Brisbane maybe) they will play better.

I'm sure not a single person present would've been disappointed with this gig, especially the performance from Unwritten Law, they was first class yet again. If you missed out well I'm sorry for you cause it was just brilliant, everyone over East go check them out or you will be sorry!! Oh yeah and now my thanks yet again to Kat (for being a very safe driver under the pressure of being late), Claire (for taking the pics you see here - very good first up job, hehe) and to whoever in the crowd smacked out Tony and fucked up his night, learn how to pit you fool!! Oh and to the security guy on my side of the stage for not kicking me out during Unwritten Law, cheers buddy!!
