Gyroscope
Take Time
Redline

gyroscope’s Redline debut was one which I was looking forward to for quite awhile. The Perth 4-piece started out almost 5 years ago, released an EP and cassette independantly, but couldn’t seem to break the interstate barrier. After a break in 2001, the band came back fresh with a bunch of new songs and a new attitude towards their song writing and music. Opting to create more basic structured songs, gyroscope’s new sound is definitely a giant leap forward from previous efforts.

Opening up with the melodic catchy ‘Save The Last Match’, you know you’re on a winner here. Daniel Sanders’ lyrics seem to be more personal and heartfelt this time around, creating a lot of feeling and emotion, which is shown throughout the entire EP. A beautiful breakdown half way through the song builds up to a nice rocking finish to the song. ‘Only November’ is the next one to get you rocking. Sounding much like the opener, this one gets you singing along to such lyrics "I see the rain in your eyes, grey as June skies, it’s only November".

Taking a slight turn in direction from the melodic punk rock sound, to the almost hardcore driving riffs comes ‘I’ve been struck by lightning once… so what’s the chances of it happening again?’. This one is a personal favourite, after a nice guitar intro, the rest of the band comes in with a ball breaking, ear piercing emotional rock number. Vocalist Daniel Sanders sings along, while guitarist/back up vocalist Zoran Trivic and bass/back up vocalist Brad Campbell really carry the sound through the song with some great back up singing. This song is amazing live, it’ll get you dancing at the show, and in your bedroom.

‘Not Dead Nor Dying’ is much like the first two tracks, it’s the distinctive gyroscope. sound. With it’s bouncy chorus, it’ll keep you on the balls of your feet wanting more. ‘Distance With You’ is the final track, you’d think repetitive lyrics would be boring, but not with gyroscope. Once the song chorus kick’s in, it’s an all out rock attack. Driving guitars and fierce drumming really highlights the talents of the band.

There’s not much you can really say about this band and release that’ll really do justice to just how good it is. Definitely one of the better bands to come out of Perth of late, gyroscope. are ready to rock. On first listen it’ll sound a little over produced and ‘clean’, but to me it just shows how much thought and effort has gone in to make an amazing release. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more of gyroscope. in the next 6 months of 2002.
