Gyroscope

You were recently invited to play with One Dollar Short on their national tour but unfortunately couldn¹t go ahead with it, will there be a tour for Take Time?
There should be some sort of tour lined up later down the track once we have released the new disc. We look forward to it.

The gyroscope. live show is something breath-taking and not to be missed, is having such an awesome live show something the band works really hard on, or does it all come naturally once you get onstage?
Hey thanks for the props dude. I think if you've worked hard on your music, and you are playing in front of people that are enjoying it, you should put 110% into the way you portray it.
We have never worked on energy as we are all pretty wacky in that regard, but I think overall, as we are enjoying the music immensley, it shows through our performance on stage.

Rob went overseas in 2001 and since coming back, the band has gone on to play Big Day Out in Perth, toured Sydney with Eskimo Joe and The Sleepy Jackson, and finally signed with Redline Records. Was their any concern that this decision might effect the band negatively?
I dont quite follow... but anyway I'll go on to say we look at everything as a learning curve and take both the negatives and positives from every situation.
Do you mean Rob going overseas could effect us negatively OR playing BDO and touring effecting us negatively?
Answering both, the 6 month break was the best thing that had happened to us. After 4 years of playing non stop, we needed to take a break and do other things, see other things, listen to other things.
In regards to touring, playing great shows and Redline.. how could this be a negative thing? Dude!

Speaking of that Sydney trip, how did it all come about and what did you think of the whirlwind visit?
It was surreal. Most definately the most intense yet eye opening thing we've done as a band.
The Eskimo Joe guys were nice enough to let us tag along for a couple of days and play a couple of their tour shows with them.

You've been together for five years now and supported so many national and international bands, why has it taken so long to finally get a label with enough credit to put out a release nationally?
It's the way it works man. Those 5 years made us though when we look at it. The shit we learnt during those times gave us backbone i think.
Plus, we've only ever released one other disc (independantly) and we only ever made 500 copies of it. Everything else has been DIY cassette or compilation tracks.
This is the first time we actually really demo'd anything and shopped round a product in search of support so we are stoked.

The song-writing seems to be a lot more basic in style now, but so much more effective. Was this a more natural progression than something that was planned?
Yeah natural but consciously natural if you get what i mean.
We all had to step back from our instruments and try and understand what we wanted from them more clearly.
I wanted to develop my natural singing voice, and realised the thing that had been holding me back was the guitar. Zoran and I were both trying to be lead guitarists back then and none of us took much concern towards vocals. It was like fucking dualling banjo's or something. He wins as guitar king in this band.
During the break I did nothing but sing, and realised that less is more, so we kept the structures to a more rock sound that we could all relate to and rock out to much more comfortable like. As soon as we started doing this, we knew this was what we were after all along. It's all about the rock baby.

It seems that in Perth, to be successful you have to play a certain type of melodic pop/rock. Do you think that maybe that¹s the reason why it's taken so long to get recognised outside of Perth?
You do? hmm i dunno about that one. I think if you are sincere and play what you play with energy and emotion.. your shit will prevail.
Only reason why its hard in Perth is: location location location.

What's the game plan for gyroscope in the last half of the 2002?
To see how this new disc goes. Hopefully people will dig it. Hopefully get some sort of tour happening. That'd be fantastic.

Is it a relief now that you have a label with so much recognition to promote your music? Or do you feel there¹ll be some added pressure from the media/fans to deliver the goods?
No pressure mate. We're all having more fun now that we ever have. Having Redline help release our disc is amazing, as we've never had stuff over eastern states before, and just the overall getting our name out thing is a huge help.

Has the band thought of 'doing a Blueline Medic' and going overseas to play and/or record before they crack the local market?
Nah never.
Too happy here in Perth.

Owen
